What it does

The TTQ Cashew Dryer Machine (borma) dries shelled cashew kernels under controlled heat so the brown testa turns brittle enough to peel. It is a batch machine — kernels are loaded on aluminium trays in trolleys and held at a regulated 70–80°C for 13–14 hours until moisture reaches 3–4%. Heat comes either from electrical coils or from boiler steam passed through heat-transfer coils; the shell burner fires the boiler (and the roasting machine), so the shell still ends up paying for the heat, just one step removed. Correct drying is what makes dry-peeling clean and high-yield: over- or under-drying both raise breakage.

The moisture ladder

Every number a cashew plant lives or dies by is a moisture number. Read left to right — this is the same journey as the eight stages, seen through water content.

Stages 03 and 04 look contradictory and are not. Drying makes the skin brittle; humidification softens only the outer surface so the skin lets go without the kernel softening with it.

Peeling performance is decided before the kernel reaches the peeler. Miss the window and no machine recovers it.

The clock starts when kernels leave the humidifier. Beyond four hours the moisture redistributes through the kernel, the surface-to-core gradient disappears, and white-whole yield falls regardless of how good the peeler is.

The peeling window

Two failure modes move in opposite directions as kernel moisture changes. Below about 5% the kernel is brittle enough to break under the same force that removes the skin; above about 6% the testa softens and clings. The workable window is where both are low at once, and it is narrow.

Why do cashew kernels need drying before peeling?
Drying to about 3% moisture loosens the testa (brown skin) so it peels away cleanly. Peeling wet kernels tears them and lowers whole-kernel yield.
What temperature and time are used?
Typically 70–80°C for several hours, depending on load and incoming moisture; sensors hold the profile automatically.
What fuel does the dryer use?
Most TTQ lines heat the dryer from the cashew-shell burner, so drying is effectively fuel-free using the plant’s own shell waste.
