On correctly conditioned kernels the machine holds 80–85% white wholes and minimises kernel breakage below 10%. Both figures assume kernels dried to 3–4%, surface-rewetted to 5–6% and peeled within the 2–4 hour window — proper drying and controlled rewetting are what create the conditions for clean skin removal. Regular calibration keeps the figures where they should be; drum wear moves them gradually enough to go unnoticed.

The automatic peeling machine is the same peeling principle with the handling taken off people. Kernels are fed, peeled, separated and discharged without an operator moving material between stages, and intensity is adjusted from a control panel rather than by watching and reacting. What that buys is consistency and headcount, not a higher ceiling on white wholes — that ceiling is set upstream by drying and rewetting.

Both reach 80–85% white wholes when kernels are properly conditioned. The automatic version holds that figure through a whole shift, which is where the difference actually shows.

What the automation consists of

Continuous feed

hopper and conveyor rather than batch charging, so the drum never runs empty or overloaded.

Inverter speed control

stepless adjustment of drum speed, which is how intensity is matched to kernel condition without stopping.

Automatic recirculation

partly peeled kernels are returned rather than over-worked in a single pass, which is the main mechanism protecting whole kernels.

Integrated air system

compressed air clears the freed testa and carries it to waste collection, keeping skin out of the kernel stream.

Separation on discharge

wholes, brokens and skin leave on separate paths so grading starts clean.

When the automatic version is worth it

When you run continuously

the consistency gain compounds over a shift and matters more the longer you run.

When labour is expensive or seasonal

the headcount saving is the clearest financial case, and it is bigger where retention is hard.

When you run multiple grades a day

adjusting intensity from a panel between grades is far quicker than re-setting a semi-automatic machine.

When it is not worth it

low volumes with cheap, stable labour. A semi-automatic machine plus good conditioning will out-perform an automatic machine fed badly prepared kernels, every time.

The stage that decides the result

No peeling machine, automatic or not, can recover a kernel that was dried or rewetted wrong. Kernels must reach 3–4% moisture, then be surface-rewetted to 5–6% and peeled within 2–4 hours. See humidification chamber and the 1–4 head range. The air compressor is part of the machine, not an accessory.

Peeling performance is decided before the kernel reaches the peeler. Miss the window and no machine recovers it.

The clock starts when kernels leave the humidifier. Beyond four hours the moisture redistributes through the kernel, the surface-to-core gradient disappears, and white-whole yield falls regardless of how good the peeler is.
