How retail pouch packing works — and who supplies it
A buyer’s guide to retail pouch packing for cashew kernels: how the machines work, what nitrogen flushing does, and what to check before ordering. TTQ does not build pouch machines or bags.

Pouch packing fills and seals retail-size bags of cashew kernels — roughly 100 g to 1 kg — usually metered by a multi-head weigher and often flushed with nitrogen to protect the oil in the kernel. It is a different class of machine from the bulk vacuum packing a processing plant runs, and it comes from a different supply chain: packaging-machinery builders rather than cashew-processing builders. Four things worth understanding first
A different supply chain
Pouch machines come from packaging-machinery builders, not cashew-processing builders. Expect a different vendor, different lead times and different spares.
The weigher is the machine
Most of what you are buying is the multi-head weigher. Its accuracy decides give-away, and give-away on a high-value kernel is a real annual cost.
Nitrogen is not a cure
Flushing slows rancidity in an oil-rich kernel. It does nothing for a kernel packed above 5% moisture, and nothing for one that was already stale.
Where TTQ fits
TTQ supplies the bulk end: kernel sorting, auto weighing and vacuum lines, tin packers and metal detection. Retail pouching sits after that.
Pouch-packing machines and pouches come from packaging-machinery suppliers, not from cashew-processing builders, and TTQ makes neither. What a pouch line actually consists of
Multi-head weigher
the expensive part, and the part that decides whether the line pays. Fourteen or sixteen heads combine partial weights to hit target with minimal overfill. On a kernel worth several dollars a kilo, half a percent of give-away across a season is a meaningful number.
Form-fill-seal unit
draws film from a roll, forms the pouch, drops the weighed portion in and seals it. Vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) is the standard for nuts; pre-made pouch machines cost more per pack but handle stand-up formats and zippers.
Gas flush
nitrogen displaces oxygen in the headspace before the seal closes. Residual oxygen of 1–2% is the usual target; below that you are paying for gas you do not need.
Checkweigher and code
weight verification after sealing, plus batch and date coding. Both are usually a legal requirement in the destination market rather than an option.
What nitrogen flushing does and does not do
Cashew kernels are roughly 45% fat, and that fat oxidises. Oxygen is the main driver, so displacing it in the pack slows rancidity and holds flavour for longer — typically taking shelf life from a few months to around twelve for a well-packed retail pouch.
What it will not do is fix upstream problems. A kernel packed wet will still go mouldy; a kernel that sat in an open bin for a week is already partly oxidised when it reaches the pouch; and a pouch with a weak seal loses its atmosphere within days. Flushing protects good product — it does not create it. That is why the moisture target at packing is 3–5% and why the metal detector sits before the packer, not after.
Questions worth asking a pouch-machine supplier
- What is the give-away at target speed? Not the accuracy of the weigher in isolation — the average overfill across a real run at the rate you intend to work at.
- What residual oxygen does it hold? Ask for a measured figure on your own pouch format, not a specification sheet number.
- Which film specification is assumed? Barrier properties vary enormously, and a machine quoted against a thin mono-film will not run the laminate your shelf life actually needs.
- What changeover time between formats? If you run three pack sizes, changeover is a bigger cost than nominal speed.
- Where do spares come from? Sealing jaws and weigher load cells are wear items. A lead time measured in months turns a small fault into a lost season.

Pouch packing sits after grading and colour sorting, in parallel with bulk vacuum packing. Most plants export in bulk and pouch only the share destined for retail.
