Cashew Husk: Uses and Value

What "cashew husk" means depends on who is using it — the hard shell removed at shelling, or the thin testa peeled off the kernel. They are different by-products with different uses, and only one of them yields CNSL.

In short

Cashew husk is used loosely for two different things. Most of the trade uses it for the hard outer shell removed at shelling — about 70% of raw-nut weight, burned as biomass fuel and the source of the industrial oil CNSL. It is also used for the thin reddish-brown testa peeled off the kernel after drying, which is a much smaller stream and contains no CNSL; that goes to fuel, compost, mulch or animal-feed blends. Both are by-products worth recovering rather than waste, but they are not the same material and a quotation should say which one it means.

Husk, shell and testa

A cashew line produces two separate solid by-product streams, and "husk" gets used for both. Getting them straight matters as soon as money is involved, because one is a CNSL feedstock and the other is not.

If a buyer or a supplier says "husk", ask which stage it comes off. The two streams differ by an order of magnitude in volume and completely in composition.

What the shell is used for

Biomass fuel

burned in the shell burner for process heat. This is the use that pays on every plant, because it displaces bought fuel on a line that has to raise steam anyway.

CNSL

the shell liquid, extracted for resins, brake linings and coatings. Worth understanding before investing in — see the economics on the cardanol page.

Carbon credits

waste-to-energy revenue, where displacing fossil fuel with your own residue is the claimable part.

What the testa is used for

The testa stream is small and low-value, but it is not nothing: it burns, it composts, and it has been used as a tannin-bearing component in feed blends. What it is not is a CNSL source — CNSL sits in the honeycomb layer of the shell and is long gone by the time a kernel reaches peeling. Any offer to sell you testa as an oil feedstock is a misunderstanding at best.

Not waste

Burning shell for heat makes steaming and drying largely fuel-free — the plant powers itself from its own by-product. That is the single largest by-product saving on a cashew line, and it needs no extraction plant to capture.

The testa is the thin brown skin taken off at peeling. CNSL comes from the SHELL, not from the testa or the husk — a distinction worth holding onto when reading supplier literature.

Where CNSL actually sits

A cashew is not a nut with a shell around it — it is a drupe, and the layer that matters commercially is the honeycomb mesocarp between the outer and inner shell walls. That honeycomb holds the CNSL. It is separated from the kernel at shelling, which is why the testa peeled off later contains none of it.
